About me - Luci Hidaka

I’ve been a designer and an art director for the last 15 years and I study fashion since 2012. I’ve took sewing and modeling courses, I’ve watched talks and round tables about sustainability, I’ve read books, watched documentaries and I am still  studying today. In 2014 I started a postgrad couse in Fashion Business (Senac) but I didn’t finish it.

The following year my son was born and ever since, sustainability has become really strong in my personal life and the way I look, the way I consume and the way I make fashion. I started posting pictures of the clothes as a statement on Instagram and later I positioned myself as a brand.

About the brand

Hidaka Upcycling is sustainable, genderless and redesigns clothes. The transformation of the fabric or clothing into the final product doesn’t require the use of any polluting material or chemical process. I recreate with what we have; these are the unused clothes or clothes discarded by the fashion industry.

In other words: I raise the lifetime of the product, avoiding its disposal and helping the planet..Most of my creations are made from old jeans trousers, which are the kind of products that require high water waste in addition to using highly polluting chemicals. And on the top of the sustainability these creations bring many stories, presenting a very rich language.

The Creative Process

I create and model every single piece. I’m always thinking of preserving the memories of the original clothe - I keep the stitches, the pockets, the rips, the patches… Everything turns into language for my brand. It’s a handmade work in which every piece leads you to a different story and design. Today I sell kimonos, jackets or jumpsuits that used to be jeans pants in past lives... =)

I sew some of the pieces myself, but for the most part I count on the neighboorhood seamstresses. Finally, the use of red and the shapes come are a strong influence from the japanese culture-- from which I descend -- and from the science fiction universe that I admire so much.

Workshops

I also teach in workshops. I talk about conscious consumption and circular fashion; I bring upcycling references (of what’s being done in the rest of the world) and I try to stimulate people to recreate things with what we already have, enhancing a collective sustainable creative process.
